A.Ratanmani Vidyalay :
A Residential Primary School for Tribal Children in Remote Inaccessible Area of Tripura
Ratanmani Vidyalay was started as a component of KHOJ project of VHAT in 1994 to promote quality primary education of the tribal children living in the remote hilly areas of Rupaichari block of South Tripura district. VHAT believes that a good primary education can minimize the dropout in higher classes. It was recognized by the State Education Department as primary school up to class-V, in the year 2000. It receives support for one hundred hostel children from State Tribal Welfare Department, some support for food for children from Individual Donors through Give India and hostel fees from the guardians.
At present it has 300 students and eight residential Teachers. The activities include regular education as per state Government’s syllabus, extracurricular activities , e.g. computer class(basics),health education classes, training on gardening, animal rearing, cultural activities and folk dances.
The school conducts an Annual Gathering Meeting each year in December where the students, parents, school committee members, hostel committee, local leaders & teachers remain present. They have overall discussion on the performance of the students and they planned the activities for the following year. Cultural programme perform by the school students.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
VHAT Monitoring and Evaluation Committee along with the Executive Director do the yearly evaluation as it is important to keep watch on the project for its continuation as well to achieve its targeted activities.
Case Study:

Rubel Tripura |

In January 2013, seven years old Rubel was admitted in Class-I in Ratanmani Vidyalay . He was staying in the school hostel. His parents are very poor. They work as Jhumias(shifting cultivator in the hills) in Baga Chatal village under Rupaichari Block.This is one of the most remote blocks of Tripura. Rubel was good in study and in sports. The school encouraged him for participating regularly in the sports. In last annual exam, he achieved 80% marks and promoted to Class-IV. In February 2016, he participated in district level sports competition in South Tripura District and was selected for admission in Sports School at Agartala, under Sports Authority of India where he is now getting all free opportunity for study and for developing himself as a good sportsman.
Ms Monita Mog was born on 12th April 1994 with congenital deafness.Her parents
Mr. Athai Mog and Ms. Aamama Mog were neighbors of Ratanmani Vidyalay. When
Monita became six years old, VHAT - CBR project for persons with disabilities admitted
her to a Govt. deaf & dumb school at Agartala. There she stayed for
three years without much improvement. Her parents withdrew her from
that school. Then she was admitted to Ratanmani Vidyalay. Monita
completed her primary education from Ratanmani Vidyalay and joined
the near by Gov High School.. |
She passed Madhyamic examination in
2016 and received job under Group-D section of P.W.D. Department
of Government of Tripura.This was a great success story of Ratanmani
Vidyalay & VHAT - CBR project for persons with disabilities in Rupaichari block of Sabroom subdivision of South Tripura District.Sanjit came from a extremely poor family of Subalpara village of East Sabroom
panchayat.His parents Sri Chandan Mohan Tripura and Smt. Anjali Mala Tripura are
working as labourers in jhum cultivation. Sanjit admitted in class-
I in Ratanmani Vidyalay in January 2012 and was staying in school
hostel where free food, coaching and extra curricular training was
provided to him. In last Annual Examination in December 2016,
he achieved 97% marks and promoted to class six . In January
2017 he got admitted in a government high school with free hostel
facilities and merit stipend. Everybody in Ratanmani Vidyalay was
happy for his achievement.
B. Tripura Bal Gurukul :

This project has been implementing in collaboration with Indian Development Foundation
(IDF), Mumbai at Dashami Ghat slum area of Agartala. The project referred as Tripura
Bal Grukul, initiated with the objective to provide the coaching to the poor school going
children of the slum area. Students were selected based on the academic performance as
well as the family background with the consultation of the local organization named
Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Samajik Sanstha. Through the coaching we try to support the confidence
building of the students towards their study and also guide them as per requirement for
improvement of their education. 2 (two) dedicated VHAT staff as empowered teachers have been engaged in the project. On an average number of children in Tripura Bal Gurukul is 40-50 including both boys & girls. Beside attending the coaching classes, the students were also involved in some extracurricular activities like drawing competition , dances and singing as celebration of Children’s Day (Sishu Divas), Rabindra Jayanti and Teachers’ Day.
C.NIOS Courses:
Since 2007, VHAT has been running a Vocational Training Centre accredited by
National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), under the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Government of India. Vocational Training Centre of VHAT intends to create
employment opportunity for the youths. The courses offer by VHAT Vocational Education Centre: (AVI-700001) are-1. Certificate in Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) , 2. Certificate in Community Health ( CCH),3. Certificate in Care of Elderly ( CCE) 4. Certificate in Homoeopathic Dispensing ( CHD), 5.Certificate course in Yoga.
